“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes…” -Romans 1:16
The workplace isn’t just where we earn our livelihood—it’s a mission field where Christians have unique opportunities to advance the gospel. When believers work alongside one another with shared kingdom purpose, they create a powerful synergy for Christ’s mission. But what should we expect from each other if we’re serious about contributing to the work of the gospel in our professional settings?
Boldness in Identity
First, we should expect one another to embrace our Christian identity with appropriate boldness. While wisdom is necessary in different workplace environments, Paul reminds us not to be “ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes” (Romans 1:16).
Fellow believers should encourage one another to be authentically Christian, neither hiding their faith nor wielding it insensitively. This might mean praying together before important meetings, speaking of your faith when natural opportunities arise, or simply letting biblical values visibly guide your decisions and interactions.
Prayer Support for Gospel Opportunities
We should expect believers to pray consistently for each other’s gospel witness. Paul asked fellow Christians to “pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel” (Ephesians 6:19).
Christians who are serious about gospel advancement make it a priority to pray specifically for their colleagues’ witness opportunities and challenges. This spiritual support creates a foundation for effective ministry in the workplace.
Lifestyle Congruent with Our Message
For the gospel to advance, we must expect lifestyles that align with our message. Jesus emphasized the importance of visible faith: “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).
This requires mutual accountability among believers. When Christians display integrity, excellence, kindness, and ethical conduct consistently, they build credibility for the gospel message they represent. Conversely, hypocrisy creates significant barriers to gospel receptivity.
Collaborative Gospel Conversations
Christians should expect each other to build upon one another’s gospel conversations strategically. In 1 Corinthians 3:6, Paul notes, “I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow.“
This collaborative approach recognizes that gospel work happens in stages. One believer might build relationship with a colleague, another might share Scripture at an appropriate moment, and yet another might answer difficult questions or extend an invitation to church or a Christian event. Together, we participate in God’s work of drawing people to Himself.
Prioritizing Spiritual Growth Together
To effectively contribute to gospel work, Christians should expect one another to prioritize spiritual growth. Colossians 3:16 instructs us to “Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom.“
This mutual discipleship strengthens our collective witness. When believers intentionally discuss Scripture together, share resources, or even participate in workplace Bible studies when possible, they develop the spiritual maturity needed for effective gospel ministry.
Graceful Unity in Diversity
The gospel advances most powerfully when Christians demonstrate unity despite differences. Jesus prayed “that all of them may be one, Father…so that the world may believe that you have sent me” (John 17:21).
We should expect fellow believers to work toward gospel-centered unity rather than division over secondary matters. This means respecting denominational differences while focusing on our shared mission, bridging political divides with kingdom perspective, and resolving conflicts biblically.
Think and Pray: As Peter reminds us, we should “always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect” (1 Peter 3:15). When Christians join together with these shared expectations and practices, the workplace becomes not just a place of professional accomplishment, but a powerful platform for gospel advancement. Heavenly Father, I pray that You would help me grow in boldness this week as I seek to live intentionally with those around me in Jesus’ name, Amen!
